Lap-BandŽ Procedure

Lap-BandŽ procedure is a purely restrictive procedure. In Lap-BandŽ procedure an adjustable silicone band is placed using laparoscopic instruments just below the junction of the esophagus and the stomach to restrict food intake, helping patients to feel full sooner. The band is connected by tubing to a reservoir under the skin and may be adjusted periodically through a port in the skin. It is filled with saline to tighten it and restrict how much food can enter and pass through the stomach.

In this procedure, the stomach and the small intestine are not cut. Normal anatomy remains intact. In contrast to the gastric bypass, this procedure does not affect calorie absorption and it only limits the amount of food consumed.

As a result, weight loss is slower and less compared to the gastric bypass and failure rates are higher. In addition, this is not a good option for people that consume a lot of sweets, liquids high in calories or have a lot of weight to lose. The effect of band adjustment is not always predictable and vomiting is more likely to occur, compared to gastric bypass.
