Kitchen Tour 2008

On September 27th, Kitchen and Bath & Design and Construction (KBDC) of West Hartford, ran its 6th annual Kitchen Tour. Despite cloudy skies and rain, many weathered the unpleasant conditions, to see first hand, five amazing design transformations that KBDC remodeled in 2008.

For the past five years, homeowners of previous kitchen and bath design projects, all renovated by Kitchen and Bath & Design and Construction, have opened their doors to the public, to share both their experience, as well as the new additions of their homes.

In addition to the five stops/homes on this year’s tour, guests also had an opportunity to visit Kitchen and Bath & Design and Construction’s new showroom, located at 139 Vanderbilt Avenue in West Hartford… a wonderful new addition to West Hartford’s new design district. While the Kitchen Tour provided a nice alternative to a rainy day indoors, there was so much more to do and see this year, besides just remodeled kitchen and baths.

Pegi Deitz Shea, a renowned children’s book author, who published such great books as Patience Wright: America’s First Sculptor and Revolutionary Spy and The Boy and the Spell, was stationed at one of the homes, singing copies of her work, while Chef Emily Brooks from the Connecticut Farm-to-Chef Program of the Connecticut Department of Agriculture, was also present. Proceeding with the tour, guests were welcomed by artist Joy Newton, designer of beautiful home accessories, which illustrate the beauty of nature, and author Hannah Kaminsky, of the recently released cookbook My Sweet Vegan. Another highlight on the tour this year, was that guests were even able to take a minute and listen to the sound of the rain, as they enjoyed a personal massage… after shopping at 57 Lexington Road, a stop on the tour, where the dining room was transformed into KBDC’s interior design/retail division, Francine Taylor.

With so much to do, see, and admire, the 2008 Kitchen Tour was a big success, and thanks to the small admission fee that each guest paid, the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Saint Francis will continue to do, what it does best, caring for the most critically ill newborns… for all of the proceeds raised at this year’s event will specifically benefit the “Better Beginnings” fund.

This “Better Beginnings” fund works to purchase vital medical equipment for the NICU, fund education and professional development of the NICU staff, support environmental needs for the NICU, and to also maintain visitations rooms for patients and their families. While the partnership with Saint Francis Hospital and Medical Center, and Kitchen and Bath & Design and Construction, began only a year ago, it is certain that it is definitely going to continue for many years more to come. Thanks to all who contributed to this year’s event, and we look forward to seeing everyone next year, as we celebrate the 2009 Kitchen Tour.
